February and early March have been busy months for us! Below are a few of the Eco-Adventures and Community Events that we participated in. Thank you to our amazing educational and community partners that helped build these events.
Environmental Education Eco-Adventures
We have many amazing partners and collaborators. One of our absolute favorites is the Wilderness Art and Literacy Collaborative (WALC) from Downtown High School. This semester WALC’s theme is “We are from the Land – Land, History and Self” which reminds us all why LEJ’s work is so important. They worked with LEJ three times in 2019 so far. In March they participated in an environmental justice focused activity created and facilitated by Young Adult Eco-Apprentice Laura.
In February we hosted 23 Lincoln HS students for an environmental education Eco-Adventure. Students transplanted 150 plants and cleaned 100 pots and 4.04 grams of seeds. A favorite quote from the day was, “I learned that spending time helping the environment is fun.” We agree!
We recently had 31 middle-school-aged youth at LEJ participating in an Eco-Adventure Environmental Education activity. Some students helped cut carex and shared that it was “…so fun! I could do this all day!” Thank you to the students and staff at St. Johns for being such great Eco-Stewards!
Community Events
One of our favorite events from February was the Aquarium of the Bay’s SANKOFA Days. Over 300 young people and families took part in activities focused on climate change, the environment and environmental justice, and sustainability. We are grateful that we could be part of the day and thank the community organizations and partners who made the day such a success.
The San Francisco Parks Alliance hosted a Partner Conference in early March, to help build the capacity of park and open space advocates, in addition to providing a fun, accessible space for networking for volunteers, professionals, city officials, experts, and advocates. Ildiko Polony, LEJ’s Nursery Manager, spoke on a panel entitled “The ABCs of Urban Planting and Landscape Planning.”
LEJ attended the 39th annual Black Cuisine event. We loved seeing the community out, enjoy great food, and celebrate our vibrant neighborhood. Our thanks to Bayview Senior Services Programs Director, Michael Bennett, for the invite.
Finally, Alma featured Nicole McClain in a post highlighting “13 Reasons to Be Optimistic on International Women’s Day“. Alma is a platform for supporting top nonprofits. They create funds – portfolios of nonprofits – that you can support with a single monthly donation. Click here to learn more about their work.
