Literacy for Environmental Justice Development & Communications Manager Job Description

Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) is a place-based nonprofit organization that, since 1998, has strengthened at-risk communities and the natural environment in southeast San Francisco, with an emphasis on engagement with youth. Our work has ranged from campaigns to address food deserts in the Bayview/Hunters Point District, organizing grassroots momentum to shut-down polluting energy plants, development of southeast San Francisco’s first LEED Platinum-Certified green building, and spearheading a major infrastructure and habitat improvement project for Candlestick Point State Recreation Area on the SF Bay Shoreline.

Our core activities have always revolved around connecting youth and other San Franciscans with nature by getting their hands on the land through experiential environmental education, service-learning,

‘green-collar’ workforce development, habitat restoration/stewardship, and outdoor recreation. Under the rubric of our Candlestick Point Eco-Stewards Program, LEJ provides an experience of ‘nature in the city’ and environmental learning to upwards of 1,000 mainly underrepresented youth of-color annually and operate our Eco-Apprenticeship job training program for up to 20 young adults each year. We engage hundreds of Southeast San Francisco residents in parks planning and development, and in hands-on open-space stewardship and recreation. Our native plant nursery provides 50,000+ native plants annually for ecological restoration projects that we carry out in Southeast San Francisco open spaces.
