On November 3, 2018, Literacy for Environmental Justice celebrated our 20th anniversary with a gathering at the Candlestick Point Native Plant Nursery and Community Garden.
This event was a celebration of the volunteers, Bay Youth for the Environment (BYE), Eco-Apprentices, and LEJ staff that have helped guide the organization through 20 years of change and growth.
LEJ believes that when neighborhoods and parks are cared for, it not only increases resident pride and stewardship, but raises the overall health of the community. We were honored to host so many individuals that cared for LEJ over the past 20 years and raised the health of our organization.
Special thanks to the LEJ Board of Directors for their support and guidance in planning this event. We are grateful for the Eco-Apprentices and staff that led hands-on demos throughout the day. We appreciate Milton Reynolds, Connie Shahid and Jawanza Barial-Lumumba for speaking at the program. The delicious food was provided by Auntie April’s, Radio Africa Kitchen, and A Girl Named Pinky. Music was provided by Brian Andres Trio. The photos in the slideshow were taken by Satria Santoso. Additional thanks to Flora Grubb Gardens, Renee Rhodes, Rainbow Grocery, Sudeep Rao, Lehigh Hanson, Ralph Protsik, Malik Looper, Nancy Abdul-Shakur, and Dana Lanza for making it such an incredible event.
Finally, our appreciation to everyone who attended the event and supported LEJ through the past 20 years. We look forward to working with you throughout our third decade and beyond.
