Youth Eco-Apprentice Program Spring 2019

  • Is a unique, hands on, after school work program
  • Is designed for youth ages 14-17 in Southeastern District 10 neighborhoods (Bayview Hunters Point, Potrero Hill, Visitacion Valley)
  • Is every Wednesday 4-6 and Saturday 10-3 from January 19th to May 25

Are you interested in doing great community work in Bayview? Want to learn how to work in a plant nursery, do research, and develop leadership and job readiness skills? Ready to go on some kayak and camping adventures?

Our program focuses on flooding, climate change, and becoming a leader for your community in creative and fun ways and… you get paid to learn! The stipend for the program is paid out bi-weekly on the 5th and 20th of each month. A bonus is given out at the end of the internship for those who stay until May.

More information about this program:

The Eco-Apprenticeship Program gives youth the opportunity to gain valuable environmental knowledge, employment, experience, and important life skills. Youth interns will have the opportunity to be involved with a major wetlands restoration project taking place at Candlestick State Park in Bayview Hunters Point by caring for and growing 10,000 plants as well as leading volunteers and managing the native plant nursery. LEJ’s Eco-Apprenticeship Program and the Candlestick Point Eco-Stewards (CPE) are programs of the nonprofit organization, Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ).

After the first month of paid training, youth interns will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of LEJ’s mission and policies regarding youth employment
  • Perform basic environmental horticultural skills that pertain to the daily operations of a native plant nursery
  • Co-lead volunteer stewardship events for Candlestick State Park +Demonstrate the ability to do public speaking and outreach for the project
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather and Be able to lift and transport objects weighing up to thirty pounds
  • Demonstrate the ability to get along with their peers and other youth interns from LEJ’s different programs
  • Attend all youth development trainings for all LEJ interns, such as resume writing, money management and holiday party planning
  • Attend all enrichment opportunities such as camping trips, kayaking trips, mountain biking trips and awards ceremonies for environmental leaders.

What potential applicants need to know:

Pay: Interns receive this as a bi-weekly stipend on the 5th and 20th of each month, between $1,000 and $1,300 in total.

Program meets Wednesday 4 – 6pm and Saturdays 10am – 3pm (9am – 3pm on Kayaking Days)

Program meets primarily at Candlestick Community Garden at 1150 Carroll Ave. Eco-Apps have many field trip opportunities – transportation will be provided.
