Native Plant Nursery
Literacy for Environmental Justice
A program of Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), the Candlestick Point Native Plant Nursery is a vibrant community hub that is at once a living classroom for our educational programming, a center for green workforce development, and a premier source for hyper-local Native plants for habitat restoration in San Francisco.
The nursery employs local teens and engages the community in the process of growing plants, restoring local habitats, and preserving the unique biodiversity of San Francisco. By propagating native plants from remnant San Francisco ecosystems for habitat restoration in public open spaces, we are preserving and enhancing the unique flora and fauna of San Francisco for current and future generations to enjoy. Our main Nursery is located at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, and will soon undergo a doubling in square-footage, along with significantly greater production-boosting infrastructure.
Volunteer
One of the best ways to support the nursery is to volunteer! Your participation sustains our ongoing urban greening, eco-literacy, and community stewardship activities. We have two standing volunteer days each month for you to join:
1st & 3rd Saturdays each month from 10 am – noon at 1150 Carroll Avenue San Francisco, CA 94124.
Nursery volunteers grow native plant stock for restoration projects in Candlestick Point State Recreation Area (CPSRA) and help out with special nursery projects like seed cleaning, weeding, pruning, nursery operations and maintenance and propagation. Volunteer with us to help restore wildlife habitat and enhance our open spaces.

LEJ’s Candlestick Point Native Plant Nursery provides plant stock for a number of projects throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Satellite Nursery on Treasure Island
LEJ operates a satellite Nursery on Treasure Island where the majority of propagation is taking place for the plants for Yerba Buena Island redevelopment’s public parks and landscaping, our largest plant contract to date.
We host volunteer events and Eco-Steward Team Building activities at this nursery as well.
